AB Lietuvos Dujos moved to the final stage of construction a new gas compressor station
On 5 August 2010, at 10 a.m., turbines and compressors were blessed at the new Jauniunai gas compressor station constructed by AB Lietuvos Dujos. The ceremony of blessing was carried out by the Ach-priest Dean of the St. Michael Church Leonas Klimas. The ceremony was attended by the representatives of the Parliament (Seimas) and the Energy Ministry of the RL, the local government of the district of Sirvintai, constructing companies and the AB Lietuvos Dujos managers and experts.
The project of the gas compressor station is implemented as a part of the National Energy Strategy of Lithuania adopted in 2007. The station is aimed to ensure required natural gas supply to Lithuanian consumers after decommissioning the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and to support increasing gas transit also having in mind future infrastructure projects and interconnections. The design works of the station started in 2007, and, at the end of 2009, the construction works were initiated. The completion of construction works and commissioning of the station is expected at end of this year.
‘The gas compressor station is strategically important for Lithuanian businesses for next decades. This station also is necessary for the fulfilment of obligations of Lithuania as a transit country. Looking forward to the future, if any other interconnections or large infrastructure objects are built, e.g. a liquefied gas terminal, nothing can be done without powerful station. I would like to emphasize that the new compressor station will meet all safety, reliability, and ecological requirements applied to such objects in the European Union’, – said the AB Lietuvos Dujos General Manager Viktoras Valentukevicius at the ceremony.
Natural gas will be compressed at the new compressor station, and due to this gas pressure in a transmission pipeline will be increased up to 55 bar. In this way, the gas carrying capacity of a transmission pipeline will be raised, which, in its turn, will enable to transport a larger amount of natural gas. For the time being, the following major equipment of the station is already installed in Jauniunai: gas turbines, compressors, gas cleaning and gas cooling and other equipment. Electric, automation, and data transmission systems are under installation, commissioning procedures will start later. In compliance with available technical requirements, gas compressor stations are to be installed approx. every 200 km. The construction of the new gas compressor station is financed at AB Lietuvos Dujos sole expense. The cost of the object, as it is planned, will exceed LTL 200 million. The Company has already invested almost LTL 150 million in this project by the middle of 2010.
Almost all major Lithuanian constructors of gas and other pipelines and erectors of different facilities were involved in the implementation of this project: AB Kauno Dujotiekio Statyba (a general contractor), UAB Siauliu Dujotiekio Statyba, UAB Alvora, UAB Siauliu Ranga, and several tens subcontractors. During some stages of construction, about 250 people carry out works in the territory of the gas compressor station at one time. The installation works of major equipment are regularly supervised by the representatives of the manufacturer of equipment MAN Turbo&DIESEL (Germany).
The Jauniunai compressor station is the second one; AB Lietuvos Dujos, since 1974, has been operating the Panevezys gas compressor station, the capacity of which is not sufficient because of growing demand for gas in Lithuania and neighboring countries.
